Analysing the efforts of preserving and promoting Malay cultural heritage through Malay dance in Singapore
Traditional arts plays an important role in the development of the Singapore identity. Moulded by the diversity of cultures in Singapore, the Malay dance industry has developed tremendously in the past few years. This is evident in the rising numbers of Malay dance groups and programmes offered. As a form of intangible heritage, Malay dance plays an important role in preserving and promoting its cultural heritage. Many different policies have also been introduced to govern and support this development – from Our SG Arts Plan to Our SG Heritage Plan. However, are these programmes and policies beneficial in preserving and promoting Malay cultural heritage through dance? The purpose of this research is to analyse the effectiveness of these efforts and find out if there are any recommendations to further increase its effectiveness. The research methods utilised are interviews with five industry players representing different sectors of the Singapore Malay dance industry and the use of literature reviews.
