Singapore Malay theatre: Towards a more sustainable future – a financial approach
This study explores the financial sustainability of Malay theatre in Singapore, which has been heavily reliant on government grants and alternative funding sources. With the COVID-19 pandemic highlighting the need for arts groups to adopt a more business-oriented approach, this study investigates the strategies and models employed by Teater Ekamatra, Teater Kami and Rupa Co.lab to strive towards financial sustainability. It highlights the impact of government funding and external economic factors, misconceptions surrounding the management and administration of non-profit organisations, and competition among Malay theatre groups.
Through these findings, it is suggested that a more business-oriented approach, acknowledging the misconceptions of company leaders, and promoting resource sharing and collaboration may promote a more financially sustainable Malay theatre industry. The case study interviews with Teater Ekamatra, Teater Kami, and Rupa Co.lab reveal the challenges faced by small teams in the industry and the importance of understanding the wider ecosystem to achieve financial sustainability.
