Local audience development for Singaporean independent music: A study on Singapore's indie music scene through the lens of the community

Situating the study within Singapore in 2023, the research goal of this paper is to first identify characteristics of Singapore’s independent music scene, understanding its key developments, sound and community. Through this initial exploration, the study aims to identify the challenges in local audience development that are specific to Singapore's independent music scene and examine current strategies used by musicians and local initiatives to address them.

Adopting semi-structured interviews, this research will be conducted through the lenses of individuals who are at the forefront of Singapore’s independent music scene. Drawing from the personal and professional experiences of musicians and producers in Singapore who are actively supporting its independent music community, this paper hopes to explain the negative implications of the challenges in audience development for the local independent music scene and call attention to the unfulfilled needs of its community that impede the development of local audiences.
