The ASEAN Way: On building regional identity through culture
The dissertation aims to understand how ASEAN has used culture to build a regional identity among its member countries. Specifically, the study will seek to answer the following research questions:
• How does ASEAN operate its arts and culture initiatives?
• Who are the stakeholders involved in ASEAN’s cultural initiatives?
• What are the cultural initiatives done to promote the ASEAN identity?
The findings of this study will contribute to a better understanding of the way ASEAN operates and how culture has been implemented to build a shared regional identity among ASEAN member countries. This research has potential implications for stakeholders interested in promoting cultural initiatives and identity-building efforts on a regional scale, and may help to increase initiatives towards this area.

Nur Ashikin Ali
Ashikin is an experienced project executive with an eye for visual design. She utilises her knowledge in digital media to assist in user experiences, internal working systems and build bridges in creative projects.
Having worked overseas in Cambodia executing digital campaigns, Ashikin's fields of interest lie in cultural diplomacy, creative collaboration and cooperation, as well as international relations. Ashikin has worked in government administration, museums and arts companies. Her most recent role in 2022 was as an Intern for the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) culture department.
Ashikin believes that by expanding her perspective of the world, she can improve her skills as an aspiring arts and culture manager.
