An island of possibilities: Holding space for independent and alternative artists in Singapore
The study examines the emergence of independent and alternative art spaces in Singapore. Often manifesting in commercial spaces, they are self-organised, run by artists or curators, and show work that are more unconventional.
Incited by the lack of documentation and inquiry into the autonomy and organisational structures of such artistic practices as well as the forms they have taken, the study analyses independent space I_S_L_A_N_D_S. The study situates the space in its context, allowing art managers to gain a better understanding of the importance of such a space for experimentation, community-building and artistic freedom.
