Exploring the narrative of Malay identity through the Siapa Nama Kamu? exhibition
The National Gallery Singapore’s permanent exhibition Siapa Nama Kamu? aims to showcase art's relevance to Singapore over the past 50 years, as well as to enable visitors to understand and appreciate Singaporean art, its growth, and links with Southeast Asia and the world. The exhibition features over 400 works and the curatorial narrative for the exhibition is divided into six major sections, each with its own sub-theme, beginning with artworks created in the 20th century by colonial encounters of Singapore. However, featuring only 39 non-Chinese artists in a gallery of 400 works, in a country that prides itself on its multiethnic citizenry, the lack of diversity of ethnic minority artists obscures the fact that Singapore was once a part of the Nusantara or Malay Archipelago.
