Situating Chinese artists in contemporary art auctions: Top 20 Chinese artists in international vs domestic auctions

The aim of this paper is to describe and analyse in detail the underlying causes for the significant difference in the performance of the top 20 Chinese contemporary artists at domestic and international auction houses from 2000 to 2020. Overall, this paper highlights the complex and dynamic nature of the Chinese contemporary art market and the various factors that influence contemporary Chinese artists’ performance at both international and domestic auction houses.

Sherry is a practicing arts manager based in Singapore and China. She is graduating with a BA(Hons) Arts Management from LASALLE College of the Arts in 2023. Sherry is experienced in assisting international artists with their exhibition planning, marketing, write-up, artwork shipping and installation. She participated in Shanghai local art fair West Bund Art & Design and ART021 from 2017 to 2019, as well as Art Basel Hong Kong 2018. Possessing both the perspective of an artist and gallerist, Sherry hopes to devote herself to helping Chinese art crossover and connect across different cultures.
