Candice Chan

MA Art Therapy

Candice is drawn to the wonders of the creative process and its potential in promoting healing through art. Guided by this sense of wonderment, the exploratory therapeutic journeys she embarks on with the individuals she works with are  often filled with meaningful deliberation and thoughtful intentionality. This also parallels her art practice of using mixed media as her main form of self-expression.

Prior to joining the MA Art Therapy programme, as a Psychology (Hons) graduate, her work experience was in the field of industrial-organisational psychology. She was also involved in various volunteer opportunities at charity organisations which she still continues today. As an art therapist who believes in a person-centred approach, Candice aspires to encourage and continue working with others to feel heard, supported and empowered in a trustful and compassionate space.

The Gaze of Memento Mori

The Gaze of Memento Mori explores the artist's own way of honoring death and dying. What started out as a soft reminder of time, life and death becomes a look into the intention of creating art, leaving a sense of vulnerability and rawness to her expression of emotions. As light passes through, it is through gazing that we discover the impermanence left behind.

Thesis abstract

The folding and the unfolding: First encounter informing therapeutic change through art therapy in hospice care.

This study seeks to explore the impact of the first encounter of art therapy sessions in hospice care which informs on therapeutic change. Through a practitioner art-based qualitative inquiry, this research delves into key themes relating to the three core conditions for therapeutic change through a person-centred approach. Utilizing a single-case vignette and thematic analysis, the data collected highlights the observations and insights gained from the progression of art therapy sessions. This research emphasises the importance of the initial stages of a therapeutic encounter and its contribution to the therapeutic process. By understanding the significance of psychodynamic elements, therapeutic alliances can be formed which enhances the potential of art therapy.
