Therapeutic relationship: key factors when conducting art therapy with children at community psychotherapy centre in Singapore

This thesis investigates the factors that contribute to the development of a meaningful therapeutic relationship when working with children in art therapy. Various literature review was conducted on the concepts of therapeutic relationship and therapeutic relationship in art therapy with children. The author presents a practitioner-based approach, utilizing a single case study to explore the therapeutic relationship. Three key elements that contribute to a meaningful therapeutic relationship are identified: the use of metaphor, playfulness, and response art. The thesis concludes by recommending future research that should focus on the impact of gender, culture, and the materialistic properties of art materials on the therapeutic relationship.
