In 2018, Kelly rekindled her passion for art after participating in a workplace retreat that introduced her to acrylic painting. Since then, she has been on a self-guided artistic journey, creating commissioned works and deepening her knowledge. In 2021, Kelly broadened her horizons by taking short courses on Western art histories at LASALLE College of the Arts, igniting a newfound love for the subject. It was during this time that she discovered LASALLE's MA Asian Art Histories programme.

Kelly's research is centred on the evolution of watercolour painting, with her thesis focusing on the intricate use of colour, light and shadow in this traditional medium. She aspires to curate exhibitions related to watercolour paintings and their connection to Southeast Asia’s history, as well as explore other art mediums, particularly Chinese ink painting and its historical significance.

Light, shadow and memory: The evolution of architectural watercolour techniques in Ong Kim Seng’s oeuvre

This thesis investigates Ong Kim Seng's architectural watercolours, focusing on his innovative use of light and shadow, force-end brushstrokes and mastery of the watercolour medium. The study delves into how Ong's 'Conceptual’ California style—characterised by vibrant colours, free composition and scale manipulation based on personal memories—transforms architectural representation, making it a medium of joy and engagement.

Incorporating cultural and heritage narratives, Ong's artwork gains depth and broad appeal, resonating across local and international scenes. Employing a methodology that includes literature reviews, artwork analysis and insights from semi-structured interviews with Ong, the study reveals how his early architectural drawing experiences influenced his use of exaggerated perspectives to elicit strong emotional responses.

The findings highlight Ong’s integration of artistic innovation with cultural storytelling, cementing his pivotal role in evolving watercolour techniques and contributing to the discourse on modern watercolour painting in Singapore and globally.
