Khairil Shah is a songwriter and guitarist known for his eclectic and exploratory approach towards music writing and composition. Fiercely uncompromising, Khairil is unafraid to challenge his musical ideas and creative visions. His passion in transdisciplinary artform has inspired works fusing different artform such as architecture, dance, painting and music.

An advocator for the underground music scene, Khairil has founded numerous bands and projects across Singapore and Malaysia. He has worked with local acts, including, acoustic duo The Camomile Session, electronic outfit Elektone, local indie-jazz group Moods and screamo band, Talisma. Additionally, Khairil is actively involved in the Kuala Lumpur indie scene and is currently gigging with KL-based band, Johny Comes Lately. He has also worked with renowned KL band Toko Kilat and Prasasti.

Teaching philosophy and research interests

I’m all about the Underdogs.

You know in class when the teacher says to your classmates, “You are going to be a doctor, you are going to be an engineer, you are going to be a doctor…..” and then skips me entirely? I was the kind of student the teacher gave up on because I was pointless to her – I didn’t fit in.

As an educator, I want to give back to the less privileged and, the underdogs. My mission statement is to bring to light the ones that go unheard and give them an avenue to shine.

The power of space: Experience design through the merger of space and music

In a performing arena, the space is not merely a location for an event to take place. The space in itself is an instrument and an integral element of a performance, hence contributing to the audience (human) experience.

“What can humans experience out of a music performance?
What happens if a piece of music is performed at a different
space and location? How will it affect the audience?”

This research dives deep into the psychology of space and the influence of environment on human experience and perception.
