Exploring effort dynamics: Integrating Laban Movement Analysis into the pedagogy of Randai Minangkabau theatre with Rauing Singa as a case study

This study explores the integration of Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) into the pedagogy of Randai Minangkabau Theatre, a traditional Indonesian art form combining dance, music, martial arts and storytelling. By applying LMA's effort component – space, time, weight and flow – the research enhances performers' technical proficiency, deepening cultural understanding within Southeast Asia's diverse performing arts traditions.

The theoretical framework integrates LMA principles into the Randai movement, emphasising adaptability and expressive potential within traditional practices. Through a practice-based approach and structured workshops, participants explore movement dynamics essential for Randai performance rehearsals. Data collection methods include journal documentation, video recordings and social media analysis to gather insights from participants, educators and audience members.

The findings underscore the transformative impact of integrating LMA into Randai pedagogy, contributing to performers' skills, cultural preservation and cross-cultural dialogue. Recommendations emphasise ongoing educational support and tailored instructional methods to enhance learning experiences.
