Journey to the West and Back: a Bidayuh sees the world is a pre-preproduction documentary script that provides insight into the history of Sarawak ruled by the White Rajahs. Their reign paved the way for modern governance in Sarawak when the second White Rajah, Charles Brooke introduced the Nine Cardinal Principles of the Rule of the White Rajah.
A personal narrative is woven, within this overall context, about the author’s maternal Bidayuh grandfather James Skadiang. His family of origin experiences – first hand – the impact of colonization by Christian missionaries when the latter stay in their village, interact with the villagers, build schools and churches. James leaves Sarawak for England where he apprentices as a printer.
James learns to adapt quickly to the culture and customs of his adopted country. He leaves England after several years, to travel to Kolangsu in Amoy, China to help in his brother-in-law’s business. Here he marries, starting a young family. Eventually, James and his family return to a warmer climate to settle in Telok Intan, West Malaysia.
