Thesis abstract

Investigating volunteer docent programmes – a study of Singapore Art Museum and National Gallery Singapore

There has been an educational transformation in the role of museums and docents play an increasingly important role in helping museums fulfil its educational mission. This study investigates two models of organising volunteer docent programmes, focusing on a comparative study of Singapore Art Museum (SAM) and National Gallery Singapore (NGS). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with docent/volunteer managers and docents at both institutions to provide an exploratory understanding into the characteristics and nuances both models entail. The research will discuss how the relationship between the docent and the institution, and how this affects the programmes’ educational and social provisions.
