Thesis abstract

Investigating the sustainability of community engaged art in Singapore

The focus and role of community engaged arts in Singapore have evolved over the years, with different policies in place to create more emphasis on community engagement in the arts. Despite increased efforts to bring the arts to local public spaces, there remains a lack of emphasis on social aspects of community engaged art projects and limited engagement with communities to identify their needs. The dissertation addresses how various community engaged individuals and organisations sustain themselves and maintain artistic intent while working within potentially conflicting government frameworks and agendas.
