The significance of Baybeats as an alternative music festival platform in Singapore
Baybeats is a music festival organised yearly by the Esplanade and is branded as “Singapore’s largest alternative music festival". First beginning in 2002, Baybeats has become one of the longest running annual music festivals in Singapore. This thesis seeks to investigate the significance that Baybeats has to the Singapore music scene through the perspectives of the artist, audiences and the programming team of Baybeats. The objectives of this paper include understanding how the term ‘alternative’ music is interpreted by the team behind Baybeats, the significance of Baybeats to Singaporean artist and the local music scene at large, the shifts and trends in the programming of Baybeats and the purpose that Baybeats serves in the Singapore local music ecosystem.
