Paul is a self-taught crochet artist with a deep interest in fibre arts and yarn work. A talent acquisition partner by day, a crochet artist by night, he loves the construction of objects and wearables through patterned stitches and knots.
With a background in musical theatre, there exists performative elements within his current body of works. He is interested in exploring the intersubjective space between artworks and audience while exploring a sense of play through the encounters.
Having graduated with an MA Art Therapy as well as an MA Art Pedagogy and Practice from LASALLE College of the Arts, he is interested in research areas such as sustainable materiality, sculptural constructions, pedagogical audience participatory and collective art-making.
Magic Circle: Cultivate a culture of care in crochet circles
This research is interested in exploring the pedagogical ways on care cultivation within a group of individuals through crochet circles.
It is theorised that the expression of care exists in the intersubjective spaces created between the group members through relationship building and empathy within the form of a circle.
A qualitative method of interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to analyse the lived experiences of the members through a series of crochet circle sessions conducted over a span of 6 weeks.
Three main expressions of care were extracted through thematic analysis from the data; (1) care for the self, (2) care for each other and (3) care through the craft. The participants were observed to be expressing care in the mentioned categories and found positive effects in being part of the crochet circle session such as sense of belonging, sense of accomplishment, and appreciation of the craft.
The group produced individual totems which were then presented as part of a collective installation exhibition in the last week of June as a post session reflection and an opportunity for audiences to experience the circle symbolically.
A pedagogical framework on care cultivation in crochet circles was established through the cumulative learnings and reflection of the lived experience in this study.
