NEO: "The First Degree"

Image

Parasitism. Commensalism. Mutualism.

Three chapters united under one theme: symbiosis.

NEO is an independent Southeast Asian publication that explores the intersections between science, nature and fashion through a culturally relevant lens for youth. It aims to break down barriers in science and climate communication, grounded in the belief that meaningful impact requires a deep, human-centric understanding of both the problem and the audience.

Through collaborations with over 20 young individuals across Southeast Asia, and in combination with data interpretation, expert interviews and interactive touch points, NEO represents an urgent need to address the current state of the climate and our relationship with it, engaging with an audience that is capable of driving the most change.

Chapter 1:

"End Of Day"

Image

Exploring a narrative interpretation of Earth Overshoot Day, the editorial is inspired by the 'eternal' Javanese edelweiss flower—a species that can be found on the highlands in the island of Java, Indonesia.

In a world where nature and humanity are often separated or put against each other, "The First Degree" questions the very relationships that keep us tied together. Themed around three different symbiotic stages, NEO invites you to rethink your interactions with nature—grounded in tension, virtue and hope.

Chapter 3:

"From The Ground"

A visual essay that dives into the world of mushrooms and mycelium networks as a proven example of mutualism in nature.

Featuring articles on a bio-tech material startup, a sustainable fashion designer and a young designer and activist, the issue ends on a reflective yet hopeful note for people and the planet's future.
