About
Melissa is a multiracial artist whose practice stems from her unique cultural identity, exploring ancestral traditions and inherited memories as a mirror for self-reflection. She is currently interested in reconnecting with her ethnic roots as a Muslim-Chinese Malaysian, with her projects centred on relearning her traditions.
Driven by a persistent curiosity to unfold the stories buried within her lineage, Melissa works across sculpture, installation, drawing and embodied gestures. She utilises materials to ground her research by manipulating textures and forms, translating academic and archival research into physical experiences.
kena sihat selalu (always stay healthy)
Kena Sihat Selalu unfolds the experience of inheriting a family recipe through the artist's attempt to learn home-cooked dishes passed down from her grandmother.
The project explores the kitchen not just as a domestic space, but as a reimagined site for collective memory and ancestral blessing, emphasising the importance of learning and preserving family traditions.
