About

Nur Ashserina or Ash is a Singaporean interdisciplinary artist with a rich background in painting, creative business, audiovisual arts, dance, music, videos and other fields.

She began drawing at the age of eight, starting with doodles before gradually exploring other channels to express her passion, resulting in unique and creative works. No single medium defines her practice, as she believes that there are no limits to expression or experimentation,

Ash is currently on a journey of self-discovery, focusing on the connection between her mental and subconscious selves and her physical expressions. Through her work, she explores her perspectives, emotions and thoughts, as well as an objective third-person view of herself. She lives to develop her artistic practice through exploration, expanding her knowledge and pursuing collaborations in future projects.

i don't know what was going through my head, so i did these

This installation features a series of paintings that showcase Ash's personal expressions, with her emotions and thoughts reflected onto the canvas.

Each piece represents a journey of self-discovery, capturing moments in which she struggled to articulate her feelings. Often, when her mind is racing, Ash finds solace in letting her emotions flow freely through her work. She has combined the paintings with a piece of video art titled pov: you're me which blends clips of her painting process with scenes from her neighbourhood, from HDB blocks to lush greenery.

This collection is a continuation of Ash's Year 2 work, with some canvases made from recycled canvas. The work is a culmination of her artistic journey, blending doodles and paintings into an intuitive expression of her inner self. Each piece allows her to channel subconscious thoughts and emotions, employing techniques such as layering, repeating patterns and experimenting with textures through scraping and smearing.

This dynamic interplay of gesso and acrylic paints unfolds in a state of both consciousness and unconsciousness, translating Ash's feelings and perceptions into visual form—often without her full awareness of the depth being expressed. Each stroke and layer represents a moment of discovery, as she strives to capture the essence of her experiences and emotions. The paintings create a 'mental space' that allows for expression without the need for words. By merging these artistic elements, she aims to portray how she perceives the world around her, where paintings and patterns often seem to move in the background of her everyday life.
