Renegotiating colonial legacies through exhibition design

This dissertation critically examines how National Gallery Singapore has utilised exhibition design and curatorial narratives to renegotiate colonial legacies and postcolonial identities.

Through a qualitative analysis of three exhibitions—Artist and Empire: (En) Countering Colonial Legacies (2016), Singapore Stories: Pathways and Detours in Art (2025-2030) and Tropical: Stories from Southeast Asia and Latin America (2023-2024)—the study analyses curatorial language, spatial layout and the inclusion or exclusion of marginalised voices.

The research uses interpretative frameworks to assess the extent to which these exhibitions move beyond colonial narratives towards decolonial practice through exhibition catalogues, press releases, critical reviews and gallery photographs.
