About
Jia Wen is an English literature teacher by training with two decades of experience in the education sector. She had helmed various portfolios in student well-being, education and career guidance, as well as leadership development for junior college students.
Prior to her studies at LASALLE, she was a Senior Research Analyst at the MOE Corporate Research Office, where she facilitated interactions between researchers, policymakers and educators to promote research development, dissemination and translation.
Jia Wen's research interests include humanities education, developmental psychology, career counselling for youths, and the literary arts.
A strong proponent of lifelong learning, she was a Singapore Fulbright scholar and holds an MA in Modern Literature from the University of York, an EdM in Human Development and Psychology from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and an EdD in Education from the University of Western Australia. She is enroute for an MA in Creative Writing from LASALLE College of the Arts and has no plans to stop.
My Year of Doing Nothing
My Year of Doing Nothing is a creative nonfiction collection of essays on a Singaporean educator who’d taken a work sabbatical to go back to school.
The author explores a variety of experiences from the year, ranging from reactions to her adult student status and not earning a salary, to navigating health woes and contending with shifting life roles.
Collectively, the essays reflect the significance of learning and studying, the importance of family, and what it means to be an adult learner in a society that prizes productivity and pragmatism.
