About

Nguyen was born and raised in Vietnam and moved to Singapore at the age of nine. She explores the themes of culture and identity through portraiture and representational art.

Nguyen's work is often characterised by a minimalist aesthetic that is centred on human emotion, identity and interpersonal connections. Through this, she explores personal identity and the subtleties of human experience.

Trải Chiếu Ra Đi (Lay Out The Mat)

Trải Chiếu Ra Đi, which translates to “lay out the mat”, is a series of three artworks that represent the nostalgic experience of growing up in a Vietnamese household. The sedge mat is incorporated into the daily life of a Vietnamese household, serving as a versatile object for daily activities or for big family gatherings.

Each mat becomes its own scene: one focuses on familiar household objects, another on traditional foods and the third combines Vietnamese cultural items with contemporary objects to highlight the tension, contrast and continuity between past and present.
