Nellie
Nellie is a plaster sculpture which explores energy, as well as energy exchange and conversion.
Energy cannot be destroyed nor created, meaning it is finite in substance, yet infinite in motion. In this sense every ending or closure demands a start of something new. Viewing energy exchange and conversion as the basis of life, the artist set out to find out if the life cycle can be reimagined as a spiral.
In this work, the life cycle is represented by a pregnant woman-like form which converges into an ammonite fossil. The ammonite fossil is a naturally occurring spiral form, and the joining of the two forms portrays conversion, growth and life. The contortion of the woman-like figure mimics the form of an unborn chick in its egg.
This work hopes to depict the interconnectedness of the world and life in it, and invites viewers to practice mindfulness in their everyday lives.
