Re/Rooted
Re/Rooted is a multidisciplinary project exploring cultural disconnection and identity within the Banjarese community in Singapore. Rooted in personal experience, the work reflects fragmented cultural memory shaped by broader societal structures. The project spans a reconstructed textile piece, a publication, and a language kit.
Inspired by a childhood blanket made by the designer's grandmother, the textile incorporates stitched fabric fragments and archival family photographs, transforming memory into a tactile form. The publication expands on research and personal narratives, while the language kit seeks to reconnect users with Banjarese words and expressions, addressing the loss of language across generations. Together, these outcomes bridge past and present while responding to the limitations of Singapore’s CMIO framework.
Ultimately, Re/Rooted is an act of reclaiming identity, piecing together memory, heritage and overlooked narratives.
