Jing Xuan is an aspiring music therapist who believes that every person is unique and full of potential, and deserves an environment which appreciates and seeks to cater to their diverse needs.

Aside from her MA in Music Therapy from LASALLE, she holds a BA in Early Childhood Education and specialised in early intervention as part of her Diploma in Child Psychology & Early Education.

Through working as a preschool teacher and music educator, Jing Xuan has gained knowledge in developmental psychology, classroom management and curriculum planning. She believes that inclusion is a right and continually seeks to improve her practice.

Working with people is more than a job to her—it is a passion and way of life.

Music therapists’ lived experiences in special education settings in Singapore: A phenomenological study

Although music therapy practice in Singapore has its beginnings in special education, there is limited research available which describes the current state of practice within this sector.

This phenomenological study gathered the lived experiences and perspectives of music therapists within the sector regarding (1) how music therapists work with, (2) how they implement music therapy interventions, and (3) their perceptions regarding factors which influenced the development of music therapy.

The findings showed that music therapy offered unique benefits—music interventions were accessible, intrinsically motivating, and provided opportunities for students to develop holistically. Music therapists also frequently collaborated with other professionals, enhancing the quality of other practices.

Influential factors regarding the development of music therapy included: available manpower and resources, perceptions of music therapy, as well as research and advocacy.

Professional practice

Through my music therapy placements, Jing Xuan has worked with clients across the lifespan in various contexts—in acute and community hospitals, palliative care and in mental health and trauma-informed settings.

She believes in applying an integrative approach whilst working with clients, seeking to understand the individual and the contexts in which they live in, before adapting her practice to suit their needs. She views clients with unconditional positive regard and seeks to recognise their inherent strengths and worth.
