Dan is a commercial illustrator living, working and plying his trade in sunny Singapore. He loves to draw.
By day, Dan illustrates for various agencies, production houses, publication houses, as well as internet media companies. He has worked on accounts for the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, National Library Board, Wildlife Reserve Singapore, National Arts Council, and other public sector institutions. He has also drawn cartoons for Mothership, Ricemedia, as well as 99.co.
By night, Dan puts on his artist hat, and his paintings touch on instances socio-political and domestic with a satirical light. Although having only stepped in the realm of fine arts for a couple of years, his work has been displayed in various galleries throughout Singapore. These include The Arts House, Aliwal Arts Centre, Viridian Art House, National Museum, and The Substation, as well as private galleries like Chan + Hori Contemporary and Artblovk.
Dan places great emphasis on entertaining, provoking and finally rewarding his audiences with his work. He aims to craft humour and satire to the highest degree every single time he sets his brush to the canvas.
Dan is the founder of the artist collective and illustration house A Good Citizen, or 好公民.
Kukujiao: Singapore's Last Superhero
Kukujiao: Singapore’s Last Superhero is a post-apocalyptic graphic novel about Aloysius Yeo, a struggling Singaporean artist who awakens decades after a mysterious catastrophe to discover that everyone he knew is dead—and that he has somehow transformed into a giant mutant penis.
Taken in by the survivors of the Republic of Neesoon, Aloysius becomes their reluctant superhero, political mascot and valuable national resource. Desperate to be accepted, he finds himself caught between the ambitions of Neesoon’s leaders, the people who depend on him, and the violent corporate raiders of Trico International.
A healthy combination of science fiction, superhero comics, political satire and grotesque humour, Kukujiao imagines a Singapore that has been destroyed and rebuilt, yet remains very familiar to Singaporeans. Beneath the vulgar jokes is a story about usefulness and personhood, artistic failure and belonging, as well as the very best and worst that being Singaporean has to offer.

Professional practice
Dan's creative practice sits at the intersection of illustration and creative writing, with comics being the natural progeny of the two disciplines.
He has worked professionally as an illustrator for over 15 years, producing editorial, commercial and public-facing work while developing an independent practice in political satire and visual storytelling.
In recent years, Dan has expanded this practice into long-form narrative writing. Comics require him to think simultaneously as a writer and an illustrator: constructing characters, dialogue, plot and storytelling motive force, while considering composition, sequential pacing, visual symbolism and mood.
His current project, Kukujiao: Singapore’s Last Superhero, brings both his practices together in a graphic novel that combines speculative fiction, grotesque humour and Singaporean political satire.
Through comics, Dan is interested in how illustration and writing can complement each other in an interdependent, interconnected and mutually dependent relationship.
