Justine Enriquez (Redd)
About
Justine, professionally known as Redd, is a Filipino multidisciplinary artist based in Singapore whose practice centres on the exploration of pop media themes through an illustrative lens.
While primarily an illustrator, she adopts a versatile approach to her craft, seamlessly integrating digital media, printmaking and sculpture to expand the boundaries of her visual storytelling.
Justine's work serves as a whimsical and fun commentary on pop media, culture and lifestyle, effectively bridging the gap between external trends and personal interests. By synthesising mainstream and niche media, she formulates unique visual combinations that establish new narratives rooted in her own experiences and creative curiosities.
SPECIMEN: SERIES
The SPECIMEN: SERIES investigates the cultural phenomenon of art toy collecting through a blend of personal inquiry and sociocultural commentary. Driven by the artist’s own affinity for blind box culture, the works serve as a mirror to modern consumerist lifestyles, identifying the psychological archetypes that define the collecting experience—from the meticulous curator to the obsessive completionist.
By synthesising research with a whimsical, nostalgic aesthetic, the artist creates an interactive space that bridges the gap between niche subcultures and public art. Each specimen on display invites the audience to explore the fine line between hobby and obsession, ultimately transforming a commercial trend into a playful, universal dialogue on identity and self-expression.
Research methodology and theoretical framework
The SPECIMEN series was developed with a framework that views the figurine as a 'narrative vessel'. Synthesising Kenny Wong’s blank slate design philosophy, Barbie’s universalism and Grape Brain’s reanimation aesthetic, the work examines how mass-produced objects can house emotion.
By applying six collector archetypes—the completionist, thrill-seeker, kidult, market flipper, soul-seeker and aesthetic curator—it employs 3D printing, lino print, assemblage and video art to explore psychological voids.
By maintaining the formal consistency of the protagonist, REDD, the SPECIMEN series emerges as a 'sacred vessel' for a secular age, demonstrating the art toy's capacity to function as a mirror for the modern spirit.
