“Ape Func Malam Ni” [What’s The Plan Tonight]

Image

“Ape Func Malam Ni” is short for “Ape Function Malam Ni,” a commonly used Malay slang phrase that translates to “What’s the move tonight?” or “What’s the plan tonight?”.

Often used casually in everyday conversations among youths, the phrase reflects a sense of community, spontaneity and social connection, which became a key inspiration behind the artwork.

This work reinterprets the narrative of Malay culture through a bold and contemporary visual style, blending traditional references with modern pop-culture aesthetics to create an engaging and immersive experience.

Inspired by local folklore, kampung elements and street culture, the illustration transforms familiar cultural symbols into expressive and playful visuals.

A comic-inspired illustration style with vibrant colours, exaggerated forms and dynamic typography was chosen to reflect the energy and evolving identity of contemporary Malay culture. Through this approach, the work aims to create a sense of familiarity and connection while encouraging younger audiences to reconnect with their cultural roots in a fresh and relatable way.

Digital Echoes: A Coded Experience

Image
A zine and poster exploring the intersection of coding and visual design, where programming becomes a creative tool for artistic expression. By transforming coded visuals into tangible printed media, this project bridges the digital and physical, reimagining generative art through experimentation, pattern and form.

This project explores the relationship between programming and visual design. Using p5.js, a JavaScript library for creative coding, Mia experimented with algorithms, shapes, movement and patterns to produce digital visuals that blend structure with creativity.

The project investigates how code can function not only as a technical tool, but also as a medium for artistic expression. By transforming digital outputs into printed and tangible formats, the work bridges the gap between screen-based design and physical interaction. The zine format encourages viewers to engage with the artworks in an interactive and personal way, while the poster expands the visuals into a larger immersive composition.

Through this process, the project highlights the potential of creative coding in contemporary design, where technology, experimentation and visual storytelling intersect.

Noise as Narrative is an experimental design project that investigates noise pollution within urban environments, particularly in fast-paced cities. The project explores how sound, distortion and sensory overload shape emotional experiences and influence the way people interact with their surroundings.

Using abstract visuals, motion graphics, and digital manipulation, the work transforms invisible environmental noise into a visible narrative. Chaotic textures, glitches, and distorted visuals were created and enhanced through TouchDesigner, allowing us to experiment with generative visuals, movement, layering and real-time visual effects that mimic the overwhelming rhythm of the city.

The distorted aesthetics reflect the tension between vitality and excess while questioning how urban environments impact human perception and emotional connection. Rather than presenting noise solely as a disturbance, the project reframes it as a cultural and emotional layer embedded within the identity of a city.

Through immersive visual storytelling and experimental digital media, Noise as Narrative encourages viewers to rethink the way they listen to, experience and emotionally navigate urban spaces.
