Venessa Lee

About

Venessa is a design communications graduate with a love for art direction and visual storytelling.

Growing up online with unrestricted internet access has done wonders for her creativity (and probably a few other things). Having spent a lot of time immersed in internet culture, from designing fanfiction posters for strangers to watching late-night ad compilations on YouTube, she realised that she loved creating for people.

Drawing inspiration from film, music and pop culture, Venessa creates ideas that are current, playful and culturally relevant. She has interests in how everyday visuals and the stories shape the way we see and understand the world.

Venessa approaches design with clarity and curiosity, aiming to create work that feels engaging, thoughtful and just a little bit fun!

Governing Identity Through Film

Governing Identity Through Film is a speculative and satirical project that examines how ideas of 'Singaporeanness' are shaped and regulated through local cinema.

Inspired by recurring audience perceptions that Singaporean films are often repetitive, overly moralistic and centred on familiar narratives, the project explores how institutional frameworks and shared values influence what is considered recognisable and culturally 'authentic' on screen.

Through a fictional government body, The Singapore Representations Office (SRO), the project imagines a system that formalises and standardises national identity in film. Using speculative design and humour as critical design strategies, it uses publications, approval forms, regulatory frameworks and guided storytelling exercises that mimic bureaucratic systems to expose the visible and invisible forces shaping local filmmaking.

Rather than proposing a solution, the project functions as a critical mirror, encouraging audiences to question how repeated representations of 'Singaporeanness' gradually become familiar and normalised.
