The Gift Garden: A Cycle of Giving

In this neighbourhood, more than half of the residents are aged 50 and above, yet the site currently lacks spaces and programmes that encourage interaction across age groups.

This reflects a broader issue of social isolation, especially among the elderly, further intensified by digital lifestyles replacing physical interaction. In response to this, this project creates spaces that support not just activity, but meaningful connection.

The Gift Garden reimagines the site as a vertical community spine that supports active ageing and intergenerational connections. It offers flexible programmes such as floral workshops, interactive booths and an elderly gym. Instead of isolated corridors, movement occurs along a shared vertical core, visually and physically connecting all levels.

This openness encourages interaction, curiosity and a sense of collective presence.

Inspired by Sachiko Gals, who reframes everyday acts of making and care as something meaningful, the project explores that giving is not transactional, but cyclical—flowing between people, materials and the environment.

The floral arrangements created extend beyond the site through a dual distribution system—shared with companies as a form of social gifting, and delivered to elderly individuals in hospitals who may lack regular social support. In this way, the bouquets become carriers of care and connection, rather than just objects.

Additionally, energy generated from the cycling stations are used to power lighting installations below, contributing back to the environment, forming a continuous loop of care and exchange.
