About

Steven is a graphic designer and communication design student based in Singapore.

Born and raised in Indonesia, his perspective is shaped by movement, culture and curiosity. Growing up in a culturally diverse environment has influenced the way he observes, thinks and approaches design, encouraging him to look beyond aesthetics and pay closer attention to meaning, experience and communication.

Steven's interests extend beyond design and often inform the way he works creatively. He enjoys sports such as football and badminton, appreciating the discipline, energy and teamwork they involve. Aside from sports, he spends much of his time exploring video games, pop culture and film, which shape his visual interests and creative sensibilities.

He also has long-held fascination with aviation. Having once aspired to become a pilot, he remains deeply interested in the industry and its systems.

Alongside these interests, Steven enjoys travelling and learning new languages as a way of experiencing different cultures and perspectives. He is constantly drawn to unfamiliar environments, conversations and ideas, believing that curiosity plays an important role in both personal growth and the creative process.

Through design, he aims to create work that is thoughtful, clear and intentional. Whether working on branding, digital experiences or research driven projects, he values clarity, structure and storytelling, approaching each project with care, curiosity and a willingness to continue learning.

Designing Sambal

This project explores how sambal can be represented through visual communication. Inspired by the diversity of over 300 sambals across Indonesia, the project proposes a semiotic system using pictograms, colour and cultural adaptation to communicate ingredients, spice levels and regional identity.

Developed through field research, visual studies and experimentation, the project positions design as a tool for awareness, aiming to make the cultural depth of sambal more visible and understandable across contexts such as packaging, menus and food communication.

Installations for the Fernando Zóbel Gala dinner at National Gallery Singapore, 16 May 2025

This concept was developed for a gala dinner event at the National Gallery Singapore, held in conjunction with the opening of a new exhibition featuring the works of Fernando Zóbel.

Created during an internship at Hellofromflour, the proposal explored how floral installations and spatial elements could reinterpret the artist’s abstract visual language through botanical forms and natural materials.

Drawing inspiration from Zóbel’s delicate brushstrokes, movement and use of negative space, the concept translated his paintings into immersive floral arrangements using real dried plants and organic structures. The installations aimed to create a quiet sense of motion and atmosphere within the gallery environment, allowing guests to experience the exhibition beyond the artworks themselves.

As a first exposure to large scale event preparation and conceptual development, the project provided valuable insight into how visual ideas can be transformed into physical and spatial experiences.

The works presented were developed in collaboration with the Hellofromflour team, with full creative credit belonging to the company and the wider team involved in the project.

Unfold.org

Created in collaboration with Omar Muhammad and Bianca Ayasha, Unfold.org is a school rebranding group project for Samaritans of Singapore (SOS).

The project aimed to create a more approachable and relatable identity for mental health support, targeted at younger audiences. Through contemporary visuals and accessible communication, the rebrand encourages more open conversations around mental health.

The project explores how design can help reshape perceptions and create a presence that feels more current, engaging and impactful.
