Gotong-Royong

Gotong-Royong creates a self-directed environment for elders through a cycle of farm-to-table café, gardens and kitchen classrooms designed 'by the elders, for the elders'.

Responding to rising senior isolation in Singapore, it offers flexible opportunities for participation that support autonomy, contribution and social interaction at an individual pace.

Activities in the café, garden and kitchens encourage meaningful engagement, while the design reinterprets former Boyanese kampong traditions to preserve cultural memory in a contemporary setting.

This project features fewer walls and larger, connected spaces to improve natural ventilation and air circulation. To maximise airflow, openings such as windows and doors are positioned on opposite sides of the space, enabling cross-ventilation.

Lightweight building materials are used for heat management due to their low thermal mass and high insulation, allowing them to absorb less heat and warm up and cool down more quickly than dense materials.
